It has been a proud custom ever since Robert Baden-Powell first donned the woggle - however the Scouting movement states it's leaders no longer have to know how to tie knots. Authorities point out present day recruits are so busy earning badges in pr, circus skills and I.T to make an effort mastering a sheepshank or a clove hitch. In his guide Scouting for Boys, first printed in 1908, Baden-Powell highlighted the value of knot-tying and told of how 3 folks were swept to their deaths close to Niagara Falls due to the fact rescue ropes were not secured thoroughly.

He said: ‘Folks often believe, “What is the good of studying such a fairly easy thing as tying knots?” Well, here's a scenario whereby that knowledge might have saved 3 lives. 'To tie a knot looks like it's a straightforward thing, and yet you'll find appropriate methods and incorrect ways of doing it, and Scouts should know the proper way. Lives could depend on a knot being tied correctly.’ However, a Scout Association spokesperson stated the movement was ‘very different’ from Baden-Powell’s founding days and today offers scouts ‘numerous exciting challenges and the chance to help the community’. ‘Clearly, tying knots is a useful thing if leaders take the younger generation rock climbing or on raft-building trips,’ mentioned the spokesman. ‘Nevertheless in reality what’s vital now is their capability to perform youth work - not go rock climbing or tie knots. It's all about motivating fresh minds. ‘During the old days, you had to carry out alot more down and dirty outdoor activities yourself - but now there is an outdoor activities centre just down the road.’ Authorities stated woodland crafts aren't appropriate for the various new badges offered and today’s volunteer leaders do not need any practical skills to start out training. However, ex- Scout and best selling children’s publisher GP Taylor claimed Baden-Powell would be ‘spinning in his grave’. ‘Scouting changed my entire life and I found the knot-tying and woodland craft side of it exciting,’ he claimed. ‘It's something we've obtained from history and protected for future years. That’s a part of our customs. ‘This just indicates what a horrible society we're starting to be. Baden-Powell would be very angry by this.’
